Mahaffey Triumphs in PGA Championship After Personal Turmoil

John Mahaffey, once struggling with personal and career setbacks, won the PGA Championship in a three‑way playoff over Jerry Pate and Tom Watson. He earned 50,000 dollars, a one‑year exemption, and praised his health and a supportive second wife. Watson led early but faltered after an eagle on the ninth, while Pate missed a 4‑foot putt on the 18th to win. Morgan also carded a remarkable albatross on No. 8.

Reds climb back to first after 3-1 win over Padres

Cincinnati moves into NL West lead by 0.2 percentage point after a 3-1 victory over Randy Jones and the Padres. Sparky Anderson lauded a resilient lineup facing injuries and a retooling staff as Johnny Bench produced a go-ahead sacrifice fly and Fred Norman earned relief, while Dan Driessen and Vic Correll contributed. Jones struggled with defensive miscues helped by an Ozzie Smith error, and Cincinnati improved to 65-45 ahead of a three-game set with Atlanta.
