A Shelbyville woman, staying beside her dying husband in a Nashville hospital, reported a thief stole her last 225 dollars and her husband's watch from a zipper compartment as she slept during a 24 hour vigil. Her husband remained in critical condition in the ICU.
In Belfast and Londonderry early Monday, two British soldiers and a youth were killed as Northern Ireland violence rose. The toll in Ulster since August 1969 reached 492, with 283 in the current year, amid IRA activity and cross‑border movements.
U S forces launched a major air operation into Cambodia from Bien Hoa Air Base northeast of Saigon. American jets destroyed 14 Soviet tanks on the Sai Gon Phnom Penh highway inside Cambodia as North Vietnamese attempts to encircle Kompong Trabek faced stiff resistance.
A Gallup Poll shows Democrats leading Republicans 53 to 47 percent as the public trusts the Democratic party to handle national issues. Vietnam and cost of living rank as top concerns, while Nixon trails McGovern in popularity by about 19 points.
