Europe clears US Airways AMR merger with Heathrow slot concession
European authorities approve the US Airways AMR merger on condition that one Heathrow slot is surrendered and competition is boosted on the London Philadelphia route. The deal still needs a U.S. judge’s approval and ongoing DOJ review. AMR plans to become the new American Airlines, CEO Tom Horton says. EU official Joaquin Almunia notes the Philadelphia route would have monopolized without concessions. Other trans Atlantic routes will stay competitive with Delta United and Virgin. States seek details to protect hubs and regional interests.
