The Goens case highlights the police handling of a sensitive funeral. Cardasia Goens died July 20 from head injuries, while Cardale Goens faces aggravated murder charges for the death of his former friend Jeffrey Watson. The department arranged a private viewing with full restraints, avoiding public contact to prevent an escape or distraction. The columnist argues Goens deserves a farewell moment as a human being and father, despite the grave charges.
Kerry and Edwards sprint from the Democratic gathering with strong, offense minded talk on terrorism and national security. Polls show rising confidence in Kerry to handle international crises as Bush faces a tightening race and a need to craft a convincing case for continuity.
Some Republicans lose faith in Bush amid GOP drift on social issues and wartime policy. Kerry targets disaffected voters including military families, pledging plans to win peace and end the backdoor draft. Democrats cite polls showing wavering Republican enthusiasm ahead of November.
