Housewives of Elmont New York mobilized to halt tree removal as town plans widen Evans Avenue. Led by Mrs Hope Fox they blocked a truck, circulated a petition and formed a hotline to protest the cutting of oaks and elms they fear will erase the country atmosphere. Local officials did not comment.
The first of nine miners trapped since July 27 in a limestone mine at Champag노le France was lifted to the surface in a metal rescue capsule from about 250 feet. Andre Jacques, 28, stepped into sunlight after a week of artificial lighting, while eight other ambulances waited for the remaining men.
