Supreme Court orders new trial for Clifford G. Chase
The Ohio Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that Clifford G. Chase, convicted in 1974 of murdering his mother, father, and brother, justified remand for a new trial due to improper jury instructions on the burden of proof for insanity and confusing juror questions. The ruling also upheld Leo Abner Jr.’s aggravated murder conviction, finding no need for a state burden instruction on self defense where the defense had presented evidence to raise it.
