Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau rebuked militants and urged Quebec French speakers to support the federal government. He addressed about 3,000 in St Georges de Beauce amid bomb threats and a single disruptive shout as his convoy passed unscathed.
Tens of thousands of Algerians sang and danced in the streets as the Pan African Cultural Festival closed in Algiers after 10 days of performances by more than 3 000 artists from 30 African countries. A son was born to Eldridge Cleaver’s wife in an Algiers hospital during the festival. President Boumedienne urged Africans to return to cultural roots, while Miriam Makeba received Algerian citizenship papers though her husband Stokely Carmichael retained U.S. citizenship.
The Democratic party will cover the pre convention debts of Hubert Humphrey, George McGovern, and the late Robert F. Kennedy. Sen. Eugene McCarthy declined, noting his debts were already arranged. Humphrey's debt runs about 1 million, Kennedy's slightly less, and McGovern's about 22000. The party also carries roughly 5.75 million debt from Humphrey's campaign.
Elyria's Anti Income Tax Committee said it will pursue a temporary injunction in the Ninth District Court of Appeals to block the one per cent city income tax. A Lorain County judge had denied a prior injunction, stating the referendum petition was invalid. The tax took effect Friday.
