Ohio Crime Victim Compensation Law Seen Underused by Seniors

Ohio senior citizens rarely seek compensation from the Ohio Crime Victim Compensation Law effective December 1976. Director Martin A. Janis says only 176 persons aged 65 and older have applied since the program began, despite estimates that several thousand older Ohioans may be eligible. Eligible expenses include medical costs, lost wages, funeral and burial expenses, with a maximum $50,000 payout. Applications must be filed within one year of the crime, via the clerk of court with a $7.50 fee or indigency affidavit, and report to police within 72 hours if possible.

Judge refuses to halt mail ratification vote

A federal judge refused to block the APWU from conducting a rank-and-file contract ratification vote among about 300,000 postal workers. U.S. District Judge Barrington Parker cited public interest in uninterrupted mail and said voting sooner could aid labor peace. The union said ballots would be mailed today and tallying would take about three weeks. The suit, filed by John Richards, argued leaders should renegotiate rather than seek member approval.
