The Big Thompson Canyon flood fires on, killing about 60. Survivors wait on mountain slopes as rain and winds ground air rescues. Officials say recovery of the dead may take weeks and remains a low priority amid ongoing bad weather and dispersed victims.
Gov. Richard Lamm asked President Ford for disaster aid after a 10 inch Rainstorm fueled a 12 foot wall of water on the Big Thompson River. About 250 injured and 40 missing. 500 survivors ferried to a pasture helicopter pad. 1,000 remained for a second night amid wreckage.
Survivors recount the Big Thompson Canyon flash flood that swept the Estes Park area killing at least 58. Helicopters ferried out the injured while National Guardsmen, deputies, and rescue teams worked through Sunday and today to reach hundreds trapped and identify the dead.
