The July unemployment rate fell to 8.4 percent from 8.6 percent, surprising economists who expected a rise. Employment rose by 630,000 to 85.1 million while the labor force reached 92.9 million, with auto industry gains offset by higher joblessness in primary metals.
A Chair-O-Plane ride at the All Nations Festival in downtown Cleveland collapsed injuring fifteen, four seriously. Victims were treated and released or admitted with back injuries. ride closed by city law department. Operators Sebring Exhibit & Supply Co. Inc. faced an emergency scene with police and fire units.
A 6.1 magnitude quake struck Oroville and northern California causing dozen buildings damage and 10 to 15 minor injuries. A 4.9 quake hit Southern California near Palm Springs with no damage reported.
Lockheed Aircraft Corp. acknowledges funneling at least 22 million dollars to foreign officials and political groups since 1970 to boost aircraft sales abroad. The SEC and Senate probe, secrecy demands, and a discontinued 750,000 dollar slush fund are in focus as the company negotiates a consent decree while warning disclosure could jeopardize international orders.

A five year old boy, Michael Yount, died after seven dogs attacked him in a fenced yard near Washoe Valley while he visited a playmate. Washoe Medical Center reported the boy died during a two hour surgery following severe bites to the neck chest and right leg. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Owen Yount.
In Bloomfield Hills Michigan Hoffa family fears abduction but police say they have no clues no evidence of kidnapping and no sign he is alive or dead. Hoffa daughter Barbara Crancer cites a Free Press account suggesting two associates of Tony Giacalone may have taken him hostage.
