Hogan captures Western Open in record 64 playoff win
Ben Hogan of Hershey Pennsylvania set a Brookfield Country Club course record 33 31 64 eight under par to defeat Ed Oliver of Seattle by nine strokes in an 18 hole playoff for the 45th Western Open. Seven Guardsmen Report For Training At Camp Ritchie
Seven of a 40 man Maryland National Guard unit showed up for a two week training period at Camp Ritchie Maryland while most others faced hearings on missing attendance. Brig Gen William C Purnell said those for whom attendance would be a hardship would be sent home and likely discharged. The unit based in Oakland was largely rounded up in that area. First Lieut Stewart F Hammill Jr commander of the Oakland Company said attendance was voluntary not mandatory. Purnell ordered Hammill to appear or resign and Hammill chose to resign.

Motions for new trials for Marie Abbott and Cyril Scottie Gordon are expected this afternoon in Common Pleas Court. Judge Fred B. Cramer will hear the motions and may not issue an immediate decision.
