Eagleton withdraws as McGovern’s vice presidential pick amid a national furor over his psychiatric treatment. Kennedy and Carter seen as potential replacements while party insiders weigh risks to Eagleton’s Senate bid and McGovern’s national prospects.
Sen. Thomas Eagleton said he is not bitter after withdrawing as the Democratic vice presidential candidate at McGovern’s urging. He announced plans to seek re-election to the Missouri Senate in 1974 and said he had not been promised any position in a potential McGovern administration.
Four teenage inmates died when a blaze swept through a maximum security cellblock at Martin County Jail in Stuart Florida. Sheriff Crowder said three inmates apparently started the fire with magazines and mattresses and then cried for help as it got out of control. The fourth victim was in an adjacent cell. One identified victim was Robert Lasset age 19 or 20 from Indiantown. The others identities were being notified. Lasset was jailed on forgery charges with others tied to auto theft and attempted forgery. A fourth inmate faced second degree murder conviction awaiting transfer to Raiford State Prison.
The Washington Post reports a $25,000 check intended for President Nixon’s re election campaign was deposited into the account of Bernard Barker, one of five men charged in the June 17 Democratic National Committee break in. The check from First Bank and Trust Co. in Boca Raton, Florida, was issued to Kenneth Dahlberg, campaign finance chair for the Midwest, and later found in Barker’s account along with numerous $100 bills seized when arrested.
IRS spokesman says $999,900 of the $1 million ransom paid for Mrs. Harry C. Piper Jr. is deductible as theft loss if the taking was illegal under Minnesota law. FBI and local police continue the investigation with no disclosures on suspects. Mrs Piper was seized from her Orono home and released unharmed two days later.
A Delta DC8 landed safely in Algiers with hijackers and $1 million ransom. Algerian officials detained the hijackers for two hours and questioned eight crew members before plan to return to the United States. FBI identified seven Detroit passengers aboard and witnesses described the hijackers and leading suspect.
A partly cloudy to night and tomorrow forecast notes a chance of showers. Temperatures range from 65 to 70 degrees overnight with highs Wednesday in the mid 80s.
President Nixon's assistant Henry Kissinger met today in Paris with Le Duc Tho and Xuan Thuy amid ongoing Paris peace talks. The White House said the session followed prior secret meetings, with Kissinger set to brief Nixon after returning Tuesday night.
