Rail relics from Central Avenue vanish into gravel pit

Old railroad rails and ties pulled from Central Avenue carried untold stories and perhaps more than one tale. They have now disappeared again, this time sunk to the bottom of a gravel pit.

Rails unearthed from historic horse railway mystery

Ties and about 200 feet of steel rails from Middletown’s 1879 horse railway were found on Central Avenue between Main and Broad by a downtown mall contractor. The estate of Ike Silverman and local historians debate ownership as the rails, buried since the early 20th century, were dumped into a gravel pit.

Munitions blast spews flame over mile square

A Navy munitions train exploded in a Roseville yard near Sacramento injuring at least 48 people with mostly minor cuts. About 100 blasts in two hours leveled a town block and damaged 600 railroad cars. Evacuations affected 2000 residents within a three mile radius as fire and debris spread.

Eight-year-old dies after being struck by car in Cincinnati

Firefighters May Face Higher Heart Disease Risk Says Doctor

Cincinnati heart specialist Dr. Dominick Davolos warns firemen may have elevated heart disease risk. In a study of 36 firefighters in Cincinnati and nearby suburbs, 11 of 31 usable tapes showed abnormal heart activity triggered by alarm signals. He notes many retired firefighters leave the field for heart issues and calls for further study.
