Elfriede Graf and Ronald Lawrence won first place at the Sebald Self-Reliance Awards receiving 400 each. Graf, a Fenwick High senior and Yugoslav refugee, rose from language barrier to leader roles while aiding her parents. Lawrence, Middletown High senior, also impressed judges with his record and ambitions.
Lawrence, praised by W. W. Sebald for his record, stands tied for first in scholarship at Middletown High. He has a near-perfect church attendance, was Ohio Outstanding Newsboy of the Year, and has worked for The Journal since 1953. He plans to pay his college costs through savings and stocks while studying law.

Allan Lawrence Pope an American pilot from Miami was sentenced to death by an Indonesian air force court for carrying arms with rebels killing 17 servicemen and flying bombing missions against President Sukarno. He admitted flying for the rebels but said only one attack mission was real. The judge gave a week to appeal or seek a pardon. Pope was captured after bailing out of a downed B26 near Ambon in 1958.
A farm family of three died when a tornado struck their Cromwell area home in Seminole County. In Oklahoma City a man died of a heart attack at the peak of the storm as multiple tornadoes churned from Anadarko to the capital, causing widespread damage across housing, schools, and infrastructure.
In Ankara the capital, about 9 000 students joined protests against Premier Adnan Menderes while martial law remained in place. Mounted police used riot sticks and tear gas, injuring many as they stormed into Ankara University and closed the universities until May 29.
Frank W. Brooks, 47, an ex-convict, was jailed in Tampa charged with extortion from three families. Investigators said he demanded $11,000 and threatened to gouge their children's eyes with a barbed hook, with letters delivered to each family.

They describe a 15 by 8 foot levee near the Lisan Peninsula and claim earthquake damage allowed the sea to engulf surrounding plains.
In Hahira Georgia police and more than 100 residents searched briar patches near U S Highway 41 for an infant reportedly seen with two abandoned boys. Tommy age four and Johnny age two were found hungry and crying but with no identification or clues to their origins.
