Alden denies wrongdoing amid OU tenure criticism

Vernon R. Alden, former Ohio University president 1962 to 1969, rejects Plain Dealer charges as misleading. He explains aides flagged health insurance handling for 5000 staff in 1966 and 1968 and says he addressed the matter with trustee Fred H. Johnson. he did not determine OU policies. Alden refutes a claimed guaranteed occupancy for a Athens project and asserts no such commitment without trustees’ approval. He notes he never partnered with Johnson in Fortune Life and that his stock purchase as a director was customary. He defends housing status for Bromley Hall as a crowded campus measure with no state funds for construction.
