Flag Burned as Dominican Rally Breaks Into Noise

About 10 000 demonstrators, many youths, gathered at Independence Park to mark the Dominican revolution anniversary. A U S flag was burned after a three hour rally amid police carbine and tear gas flare ups. The Inter-American Peace Force watched as leftist groups displayed the May Day styled banners and Communist flags. El Caribe praised the crowd but warned of possible communist infiltration while noting some participated to press sovereignty. If no major violence occurs, watchers say citizens may vote peacefully in the June 1 elections.
