Gunfire and clashes erupted in Biloxi Mississippi as roughly 300 to 500 Black residents gathered at beaches and streets after a white beach barrier dispute. At least 14 were wounded including eight Black and two white victims as police patrolled the resort city.
A light note remarks that horse sense is the faculty that keeps horses from placing bets on people, a playful take on perception and wit.
A single engine plane collided with a car on busy U S 40 about 17 miles east of Columbus, killing five aboard the plane and two adults and three children in the car. Wounded passengers were treated at St Anthonys Hospital. Dorothy Wingle, 49, pulled survivors from the wreckage and urged prayers for the dead. The plane had departed Buckeye Lake Airport minutes before the crash.
Tunisias President Habib Bourguiba declares any new French cross border attack or air space violation an act of war. He cuts short a northwest tour to return to the capital as Paris faces accusations of two raids and Algerian troop incursions aforeshadowing further crisis.

The March consumer price index rose to 125.7 of the 1947-49 base, a new high driven by a one-tenth percent rise in food prices. The monthly gain was 1.6 percent from a year earlier, with Arnold Chase forecasting a gradual food-price rise toward late summer and a payroll boost of about 16 million dollars yearly for 800,000 railroad workers.
Demonstrations in Seoul rise after riots that killed 130 as crowds press for President Syngman Rhee and Vice President Lee Kipoong to resign. Martial law tightens, tanks deployed, and police use tear gas. Rhee vows nonpartisan leadership and reforms but avoids promising elections.

Pacific storm Karen strengthened to a typhoon with 85 mile per hour winds and moved toward Formosa. The Manila Weather Bureau placed the storm about 100 miles west of central Luzon, curving northwest at eight miles per hour, with northern Luzon possibly feeling its full force. Over the weekend Karen zigzagged through the Philippines leaving eight dead and scores unaccounted for, with missing numbers reported between seventy three and one hundred ten.
A massive quake destroyed Lar and nearby villages in Iran killing and injuring hundreds. Officials estimate 1200 to 1500 dead, with unofficial counts up to 3000. Rescue work found hundreds of children among the victims as Shah Reza Pahlavi ordered relief and U S aid arrived.
Floods across Wisconsin and Upper Michigan driven by weekend rain up to eight inches forced about 400 people from homes in the Red River area and isolated 40 more. Governor Nelson declared the district a disaster and sent National Guard aid as Hurley faces bridge threats. Terrell Texas and Fort Worth area rains caused damage with no injuries reported. a Cheyenne twister injured a driver.
The decomposed body of Judge W Lynn Parkinson was found in Lake Michigan near the Loop. Autopsy indicates drowning. foul play suspected though no valuables were found. Parkinson vanished Oct. 26 after leaving the Drake Hotel area.
