Lightning Hits Farms and Homes Around Monroe and Middleton
A lightning storm caused multiple fires and power issues in the Monroe and Middleton area. A bolt damaged a Kyle farm barn on Hawkins Road near Monroe, destroying about 4500 dollars in barn contents including straw barley and fertilizer while rescuers kept the fire from spreading to a nearby house. No livestock were harmed. Additional lightning sparked a fire at Carl White’s residence on Eleventh Avenue causing 250 dollars in interior damage. An electric pole owned by Middletown Gas and Electric Co. suffered minor damage from a short circuit at Grand and Verity Parkway. A separate outage occurred when a transformer on Warren Street was struck, plunging the northeastern village into two hours of darkness. Continuous storm activity prompted several fire calls and rapid responses by local units.
