Handicapped Scout Too Old for Eagle

Pan Am rescue flight carries 106 survivors from Korean Airlines crash

In Murmansk 106 survivors plus two bodies were loaded onto a Pan Am Boeing 727 for transfer to Helsinki. The rescue crew included a doctor and nurse. Soviet authorities detained Korean pilot Kim Chang kye and the navigator for further investigation. The ill fated Korean Airlines 707 crashed on a frozen lake near Kem after being fired on by MiG fighters.

Arms talks near deal but no new treaty reached

U S Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and Soviet leaders ended three days of talks in Moscow with no agreement on a new arms control treaty. A communique spoke of a narrowing of differences, but U S officials noted the Soviets stood their ground. Brezhnev called negotiations useful and stressed the need for energetic efforts by both sides to complete a treaty soon. Follow-up talks are planned for May as three major hurdles remain over missile limits, the Backfire bomber, and transfer of U S weapons tech to NATO allies.

First Trident Sub Ohio Unveiled At Groton Navy Yard

The USS Ohio, largest submarine yet, was moved from assembly to a waterfront pier at General Dynamics Electric Boat Division. The 560 foot craft, keel laid two years ago, will be launched in early 1979 and delivered in 1980, carrying 24 missiles with six more Ohio-class subs planned.
