Severe weather from Illinois to Indiana caused injuries and extensive damage. Tornadoes ripped a 15 mile by 200 mile path in east central Illinois from Springfield to the Indiana line injuring over 30 and damaging communities, with Indiana near West Lafayette and Indianapolis also hit.
Severe storms swept the Buckeye State as tornado threats spread northern Preble County to the southern third of West Virginia. An airline pilot sighted a tornado near Dayton, while Celina reports say a lightning strike damaged the West Elementary School and forced indefinite class suspension. no injuries were reported.
A heavy rainfall turned streets into streams in Springfield, Columbus, and Dayton, causing stalled cars and basement floods. Cleveland suburbs saw a brief hailstorm while downtown did not. Berea reported half inch hail and some telephone outages. Youngstown claimed the most freakish weather. Light snow mixed with rain fell for about ten minutes in the city.
Strong wind gusts blew through Clinton and Butler counties and surrounding Southwest Ohio areas. Damage was typically minor, mainly to trees and power lines. Rain totals were not yet computed by the Columbus Weather Bureau, but officials indicated an inch or more fell across much of central and southern counties.
Storms moved through last night and today bringing hail and rain totals over half an inch. Frost possible tonight as temperatures drop. Yesterday’s high reached 60 with a low of 46. this morning’s low was 42 at 8 a.m.
