Apollo 15 astronauts John W. Young and Charles M. Duke Jr. staged a lunar Grand Prix on a cratered course. Young drove Rover 2 at a brisk pace, tilting on two wheels and spraying dust, but could not beat the speed record set on easier terrain.
Partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures are forecast for southwestern Ohio tonight and tomorrow. A low near 40 is expected tonight and a high around 60 tomorrow. The threat of heavy rain has ended and the flash flood watch for western Ohio counties was discontinued today.
A curfew was ordered in Harrisonville Missouri after Charles R. Simpson 24 shot toward the city square using an M1 carbine killing two police officers injuring the sheriff and three others and then killed himself. The spree lasted about five minutes as victims included Donald Marler 26 Francis Wirt 24 Deborah Roach Mary Stewart and Orville Allen all wounded or killed. Police and FBI backed by local officers sealed the town while 100 plus cartridges were found on Simpson.
North Vietnamese regiments overran Fire Base Delta in the central highlands, seizing the post and forcing a strategic retreat of about 300 South Vietnamese defenders. The offensive targets Kontum Pleiku and Binh Dinh with a two month campaign, while An Loc endures daily bombardment as B52s strike on enemy concentrations.
AP reports two gleaming white rocks found by Apollo 16 astronauts on Cayley Plains in the Descartes highlands. Scientists stress these rocks may reveal original lunar formations, likely from the Cayley lava flows, as breccias complicate interpretation.
