Corn Shrinkage Blamed For Shortages At Probe
Ward P. Walton of Upper Sandusky testified before the Senate Agricultural Committee that shrinkage of government corn stored in elevators caused shortages. Walton denied stealing CCC grain and said moisture as high as 23 percent made the corn unfit for keeping. He admitted selling 38,000 bushels of out of condition corn in 1950 with proceeds reinvested, though CCC records flagged the sales as theft. Walton and partner Russell Case warned the government could claim a million dollars or more against Walton elevators Walton & Myers and Sycamore Mill & Supply Co., noting shortages at all three operations.
