Frank Odusch, St. Joseph County highway superintendent, warned police of road thefts after two freshly blacktopped road sections were ripped up and hauled away at night. The segments measured 34 feet and 18 feet, and shovel marks were visible where they were removed.

Five men expelled from Cuba after a week of questioning were arrested by the FBI in Miami on charges of kidnapping pilot Woodruff Mead and forcing him to fly to Cuba. The group includes Leonard Malcolm Oeth and David Thomas Healy charged with kidnapping. three others were accused of stealing the shrimp trawler Teresa and Julia and sailing it to Cuba. Mead reported the men claimed asylum and intended to photograph Miami Beach hotels before the hijacking.
Barbara Powers wife of U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers regained consciousness at Georgetown University Hospital after an overdose of nembutal tablets. Officials say she is in satisfactory condition and still under study to determine the cause of her illness.
