The 18 year old Charles Caves operated the boat. his wife 15 year old Mae Caves was aboard with several children including John Caves age 2 and 10 year old Jimmy who stayed with the boat while others swam to shore.
Destructive storms from Indiana and Lake Erie battered Ohio’s northeast central and southwest sectors with 40 to 100 mph winds. Tornado touches reported near Yellow Springs and across Butler Warren Clinton counties. roofs ripped out, trees down, thousands without power, no fatalities and few injuries. Columbus and Lake County hit twice. a large tent collapsed trapping three workers who were unhurt.
Spanish authorities announced at dawn the execution of Julian Grimau Garcia, a 52 year old Communist leader, by firing squad at Carabanchel prison. The case drew immediate condemnation from Soviet Premier Khrushchev and British MP John Mendelson, who called it a grave miscarriage of justice.
More than 600 inmates rioted at New Westminster’s maximum security penitentiary after a guard was taken hostage. Police and RCMP used tear gas as 150 officers and hundreds of prisoners clashed. three inmates triggered the hostage situation in an auditorium as negotiations failed and the largest uprising in the prison’s history continued.

The mission to locate the nuclear submarine Thresher lies at depths over 8 000 feet with 129 crew lost. Navy officials warn locating the wreck will be very difficult and could take weeks or months as the Trieste bathyscaphe awaits a safe discovery and data gathering.
