Cleveland AP reports the Supreme Court denied absolute immunity to state officials and Ohio National Guard members over the May 4 1970 Kent State shootings. Dean Kahler called the ruling a historic judicial act.
The Ohio Supreme Court ruled on an appeal by parents of four slain Kent State students and others wounded in the 1970 campus shootings. They may pursue wrongful death suits against Governor, university officials, and National Guard leaders, while one defendant defended the decision as harmful to law enforcement.
Police charged 31 year old Richard Raymond Valenti with three counts of murder and six counts of assault after three missing girls were found buried in beach graves near Charleston. The victims are Mary Earline Bunch 16 Alexis Ann Latimer 13 and Sherrian Clark 14.
President Nixon vows to lower U S trade barriers with Latin America and to foster private investment, hosting 24 Latin American foreign ministers at the White House. He stresses sovereign limits for investors but cites private capital as vital for development, as Kissinger leads talks ahead of the OAS General Assembly in Atlanta.
About 30 cars of a Baltimore and Ohio freight train derailed along the riverbank in Kent injuring two of nine fishermen nearby. Police said John C. Bosman, 28, and Dwight W. Moore Jr., were taken to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna for treatment. Three or four cars tumbled into the river.
NEW PHILADELPHIA Ohio AP A 30 year old woman Judith Stanfield of Vermillion was injured early today after walking into a moving airplane propeller. She was in fair condition at Dover Union Hospital after surgery to repair an injured arm.
Nixon selects Simon, 46, former Wall Street banker and head of the Federal Energy Office, to replace Shultz as Treasury secretary. Simon faces inflation pressure, aims to reassert Treasury influence, and will lead two key policy groups, Troika and Quadriad, while Kissinger looms in international policy.
Israeli planes again bombed Syrian positions on Mt Hermon as Syrian gunners fired on Israeli forces. Egypt signaled potential intervention if needed. In Pardes Katz a hand grenade wounded 12 Arabs and one Jew.
Partly cloudy skies are forecast for the Middletown area tonight and Friday with lows in the low 50s and highs in the upper 60s. Yesterday's high was 64 and the overnight low 39. The outlook shows clouds Saturday and a chance of showers Sunday and Monday with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s.
Director John T. Dunlop of the Cost of Living Council says a 13.6 percent rise in steel firms costs will push steel prices higher. He expects substantial inflationary pressure as wage and price controls end on April 30 and notes possible extra 5 percent cost from new labor deals. Higher steel costs lift prices for autos and home appliances.
French playwright Marcel Pagnol who portrayed Marseille life died at his Paris home after a long illness aged 79. He wrote Topaze and the Marius Fanny Cesar trilogy with multiple film and stage adaptations and was elected to the Academie Francaise in 1946.
