Saxbe says Laos incursion boostsSaigon resolve to fight alone
Senator William B. Saxbe after a four day South Vietnam trip says the Laos operation gave South Vietnamese confidence to handle their own battles. He notes the war winding down but opposes a fixed withdrawal deadline and expects a volunteer force to remain with advisory and support troops. He reports mixed morale among U S troops with boredom in some Air Force units and says Viet Cong and North Vietnamese terrorism has reasserted itself. He met his son 1st Lt Charles R Saxbe a Marine platoon leader and visited Japan and India during a 10 day tour.
