About 20 million Americans race to file 1976 federal income tax returns by midnight April 15. Extensions are available via Form 4868, with penalties for late payment or underpayment, and IRS will compute tax if needed.
President Carter formed a labor management group led by AFL CIO President George Meany and GE Chairman Reginald Jones to pursue voluntary wage and price policies aimed at cutting inflation. Treasury Secretary Blumenthal will coordinate government representatives. no price controls. He also discussed meeting Soviet leader Brezhnev and rejected a permanent income tax cut as inflationary.
Mobutu’s government blames Soviet, Cuban and Angolan support for rebel incursions in Shaba. Zaire claims Ruskies bombed Kalene Hill and two villages in Zambia as Paris disputes French pilot involvement. French officials confirm a training mission and airlift support for Mobutu's forces.
300 FBI agents protested outside a New York courthouse as Clarence Kelley urged Attorney General Griffin Bell to review the indictment of former FBI supervisor John J. Kearney for illegal investigative tactics. Kelley argues CIA officials were not prosecuted for similar mail opening.
Dianne Harris, the only female highway patrol member in Ohio's history, resigned effective April 12 for personal reasons. She had been assigned to the Castalia post after Feb 4 graduation and was still in a training phase when she left.
The FAA requires airports to draft medical emergency plans for major incidents. Plans must list hospitals and medical facilities, rescue services, transportation partners, surface and air support, shelters, and coordinating agencies. Airports may integrate with local or community plans and must cooperate with law enforcement fire rescue and hospital groups.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies tonight and Saturday with a 20 percent chance of rain. Overnight lows near 50 and highs in the upper 70s. An extended outlook shows showers Sunday and Monday, then clearing Tuesday with highs in the 70s to 60s and nightly lows around 50.
