Lighter Ban Sparks Debate Over Matches on Transatlantic Flight
Democratic Senators Dorgan and Wyden pressed a lighter ban while allowing safety matches on planes. Advocates split on including matches, arguing lighter checks fail to detect them. Air Travelers Association president Stempler calls the ban overdue but favors adding matches. Business Travel Coalition head Mitchell calls it excessive. Passengers may still carry four books of safety matches, to be struck on a friction strip.
