Farmers vow to cook Democrats after farm bill defeat
Thousands of American Agriculture movement protesters gathered outside the White House after the House rejected the emergency farm bill 268 to 150. They pledged to work for Democratic defeats on Capitol Hill, saying they would “cook” the lawmakers who voted against the bill. President Carter, inside for a state dinner, was unaware of the protest. The bill’s defeat was portrayed as beneficial for farmers and consumers by Carter, who warned it would raise costs and inflation.
