Soviet UN renegade demands money and protection
Arkady Shevchenko, the Soviet UN official, reportedly sought money and U.S. protection to resign from his $76,000 a year post. Waldheim warned this would become an affair between the Soviet and U.S. governments. Diplomats fear the dispute could disrupt Vance’s Moscow talks on arms reductions. Reston said Shevchenko is free to stay, return to the USSR, or move elsewhere. He left his UN post April 5 amid government differences and has not appeared publicly since.
