Economists Debate Trade In Versus Keeping a Car

Government economists say most car owners are better off buying a new car every two years rather than keeping the old. A Federal Highway Administration report finds keeping a car ten years costs 11.89 cents a mile this year, up from 10.21 a mile last year, with yearly spikes in early years. The study used a $3,374 Big Three sedan to compare costs across regions, noting higher costs in cities like Washington and New York and lower costs in Atlanta Jacksonville and Fort Worth.
