Carter plan could raise gasoline tax by ten cents a year

The AP reports President Carter may back a standby plan to raise the federal gas tax by 10 cents per gallon for three years if consumption does not fall. The proposal aims to curb use by reserving a tax increase as a tool if demand remains high.

Miner Reimplants Arms After 1000 Foot Shaft Fall

David Lynn Jackson 19 of Bloomington Springs Tenn aided a fellow miner, Jerry Duncan 25, as a 1000 foot shaft steel plate fell. Jackson’s arms were reimplanted in a 12 hour operation at Jewish Hospital with expected 60 percent right arm use and 40 percent left. Duncan’s arm could not be saved.

Measles cases rise 62 percent from 1975 levels

CDC reports last year 39 585 measles cases up from 24 374 in 1975 with more infections in older age groups. No change in the virus tempo, but a shift toward older patients and significant state variations in incidence.

Scream proves fatal

Suitland Maryland police report a 28 year old Raymond R Foard died Monday night after attempting to climb the outside of his seventh floor apartment building when he lacked his key. A companion below recounted hearing a scream as a man appeared over a balcony railing startling Foard who fell to the ground.

Wrigley Dies Owner Of Cubs Philip K Wrigley

CHICAGO AP Philip K Wrigley chewing gum magnate and Cubs owner died at 82 after a gastrointestinal hemorrhage. He was stricken at his Lake Geneva Wisconsin home Monday night and died today at Lakeland Hospital in Elkhorn Wisconsin. He was born December 5 1984 at the Plaza Hotel Chicago and attended Latin School where he played baseball.
