Suburban Akron psychologist Dr. Robert Lance proposes that guilt anxiety and fear trigger cold symptoms more than germs. He argues cold germs exist but fear and low mood drive illness and recovery occurs as subconscious guilt is addressed, with about a week needed to change.
The AP reports President Carter may back a standby plan to raise the federal gas tax by 10 cents per gallon for three years if consumption does not fall. The proposal aims to curb use by reserving a tax increase as a tool if demand remains high.
David Lynn Jackson 19 of Bloomington Springs Tenn aided a fellow miner, Jerry Duncan 25, as a 1000 foot shaft steel plate fell. Jackson’s arms were reimplanted in a 12 hour operation at Jewish Hospital with expected 60 percent right arm use and 40 percent left. Duncan’s arm could not be saved.
CDC reports last year 39 585 measles cases up from 24 374 in 1975 with more infections in older age groups. No change in the virus tempo, but a shift toward older patients and significant state variations in incidence.
Suitland Maryland police report a 28 year old Raymond R Foard died Monday night after attempting to climb the outside of his seventh floor apartment building when he lacked his key. A companion below recounted hearing a scream as a man appeared over a balcony railing startling Foard who fell to the ground.
CHICAGO AP Philip K Wrigley chewing gum magnate and Cubs owner died at 82 after a gastrointestinal hemorrhage. He was stricken at his Lake Geneva Wisconsin home Monday night and died today at Lakeland Hospital in Elkhorn Wisconsin. He was born December 5 1984 at the Plaza Hotel Chicago and attended Latin School where he played baseball.
Jody Powell said parts of the President's plan will be mandatory and discussed later, while economists put current inflation at 5 to 6 percent. He noted the program’s presentation is delayed as more work is needed, and mentioned wage and price trend monitoring committees proposed by George Meany as part of the approach.
