At dawn a house fire in a college town killed residents as Oxford Fire Chief Len Endress described flames pouring from every opening. A vigil outside the ruined shell featured daffodils and a handmade poster with loving words and a Kenny Chesney lyric.
The article recalls several off campus fires involving Miami University students. The most serious occurred December 10, 1994 at 501 N Campus Ave, claiming Robert Scherrer III by smoke inhalation. Earlier fires include April 2002 at Pi Kappa Alpha, 410 E Church St, with no injuries, and November 2000 at Sigma Chi House, 401 E Sycamore, where a student was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
Newer sophomores moved into the Columbus house where five OSU related students died in a 2003 fire, with neighbors recalling the tragedy and some residents contesting the arson ruling. Survivors say the site should be memorialized while authorities affirm the blaze was arson.
A Sunday morning blaze at 122 N Main St near Miami University left two residents injured and others unaccounted for as fire crews from Oxford Reily Township and College Corner fought flames for 1% hours. Neighbors described screams and a resident jumping to safety while Red Cross provided support and campus counselors offered aid.
Shock spread across the Oxford campus as three MU students Turnbull Welling and Smith died in a fatal incident. McKinney and Stephanie Kirkpatrick described the event as shocking and affecting the whole student body. Derrick Thomas said even those who did not know them felt sadness at their loss.
