Tax help grows as volunteers file returns nationwide

Thousands of poor Americans receive free assistance with federal and state income tax filings through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. About 2,400 students from 120 schools train in TRS courses and work in VITA centers, helping an estimated 300,000 clients before the April 17 deadline. Many would not file or would overpay with private firms, saving millions for low income households. Volunteers from San Fernando Valley State College and Erie Community College describe the work as rewarding, and the IRS notes VITA yields accurate returns while aiding those facing layoffs or public assistance. The program began three years ago with colleges joining last year, expanding from 20 campuses to its current reach.
