A 24 year old Seattle mother Ann Salisbury walked to a 58 foot ship canal bridge with her two young children and threw the girl then the boy into the water. Four young men and a passerby rescued all three. She later told police she planned the act after a doctor urged psychiatric treatment and said she and the children faced agony otherwise. Her husband Frederick Salisbury called her a good mother who had been crying a lot.
A flash fire in a two story Tacoma house, likely from a faulty refrigerator, killed seven McCarley children aged 8 months to 15. James Clifton, 15, was the uncle. Mrs. Jean McCarley, 28, was away at a drive in theater and questioned by police. Fire Chief Fisk called the home a scorched shell.
New York police and the FBI outlined a master plan to pursue a trio of bank robbers who stole 305000 from a Queens Chase Manhattan Bank branch. Police Commissioner Adams and FBI official James Kelly led a two hour briefing with top aides detailing coordinated tracking efforts and identifying suspects Redmond Cribbins Archie Stewart and Joseph Kress along with threats to bank staff.
Ohio Governor Frank Lausche has signed the first 20 bills from the 101st General Assembly. Five are emergency measures taking effect now. the rest become law 90 days after filing. Emergency laws include licensing Korean War doctors and a $133,000 pay rise for probate judges. Regular laws take effect next June and July.
