Rolls-Royce Inc recalls more than 5,000 cars from the last four years including Rolls and Bentleys to fix a potential steering defect. About 1,350 are in the United States with a free 30 minute repair. No failures reported. Letter sent March 19.
Senator John G. Tower watched American bombers helicopter gunships and M48 tanks harry about 200 North Vietnamese in bamboo jungles 40 miles northwest of Saigon. He toured the 25th Division amid seven hours of fighting. 33 enemy bodies were counted with 16 rifles and nine rocket launchers found. Three U.S. soldiers were killed and seven wounded. Tower also inspected Mahone II base and the Sheridan tank amid ongoing Vietnam operations and weapon modifications.
Dykes Askew Simmons escaped Monterrey prison after 10 years on death row for a triple murder. Dressed as a woman with makeup and a shawl, he walked out with visitors, fled to Texas, and flew to Los Angeles with his lawyer. The escape followed a 1959 arrest for the killings of Hilda Perez Villagomez, her sister Marta, and their brother Manuel. A higher court later found error in the death verdict. the reasons the sentence was not carried out remain unclear.
Franklin County Coroner Robert Evans identified the body found in the Scioto River as Nelson F. Mapp 31 Columbus. The body was found by two youths and cause of death was tentatively crowning with further tests pending. Mapp had been missing since December 27 1968.
Mayor Carl B. Stokes will begin his re election effort with 175000 dollars in net proceeds from a Democratic dinner honoring him. The October 2 100 plate event at the Cleveland Convention Center drew about 2100 attendees, Councilman George L Forbes said.

Police probe in Chicago after a black powder bomb hidden in a pipe exploded in the basement toy department of Goldblatt Department Store. A 65 year old store employee, Catherine Lebeter, died. Five workers injured and many shoppers evacuated from the five story building. Detective notes a six year old boy reported his father reacting to the bag before the blast. Nine people were injured in all with varying conditions.
Israeli jets hit Jordanian targets after rockets from Aqaba struck Elath. Eight civilians die in Aqaba and Elath amid heavy shelling along the Gulf of Aqaba. UN observers fail to secure cease fire as both sides accuse each other of starting hostilities.
The Viet Nam News Agency reports 19 year old Pfc. John F. Lowney of Brooklyn, New York defected to the Viet Cong on February 22 citing opposition to the war. He said the White House and Pentagon push American troops into Vietnam for ambitions. He gave service number 2 467 056 and born August 13 1949.
May Department Stores Co. reports net income for the year ended Feb 1 at 34,006,000 or 2.21 a share, down from 36,287,000 or 2.36. Net retail sales reached 1,086,242,000, up from 1,017,014,000 in 1968.
An explosion at a Dottikon nitrate plant killed nine people and injured over 40 as sirens sounded across Aarau canton. The blast shattered windows up to five miles away and sent a mushroom cloud over the village, with emergency crews rushing to the scene.
The Middletown area expects increasing cloudiness and warmer conditions tonight with a chance of showers late tonight or early tomorrow. Lows will be in the 50s. Showers and cooler weather to follow Wednesday with highs in the 70s. Yesterday's high reached 74 while this morning's low was 43.
