Study of Steroid Chemistry for Cancer Clues in 1941
In 1941 at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School pediatrician Dr. Hans Hirschmann examined a seven year old boy with a massive renal cortex tumor. After analyzing the boy’s urine, 200 times more steroids were found than in normal peers prompting the NR Council and American Cancer Society to fund continued research. Hirschmann isolated 15 compounds from the urine, five identified and twelve newly discovered with two showing weak androgenic activity. He hopes to identify more and to place findings into the cancer puzzle while urging public support for cancer research.
