Crack Caused Collapse of Silver Bridge in 1967
The National Transportation Safety Board said a crack in a steel pin led to the 1730 foot Silver Bridge collapse at Point Pleasant West Virginia on December 15 1967. Forty six people died and nine were injured as the suspension span fell into the Ohio River. The board found the failure resulted from corrosion and a small crack that grew over time and warned the St Marys Bridge upriver could not be considered at immediate risk.
