Catholics Opposed to War Supreme Court Action on Draft
The Supreme Court set aside Judge Alphonso Zirpoli's ruling that the draft law violated Catholic conscience. It ordered reconsideration, ruling conscientious objectors cannot choose the wars they will refuse. The case centers on James Francis McFadden, a San Francisco Catholic objector jailed after refusing Army induction. Justice Douglas dissented.

Court actions limit federal power and uphold gun rule
The court limited federal power to punish small time gamblers and refused a Providence theater operators hearing against Rhode Island movie censorship. It upheld undercover agents with transmitter devices to trap narcotics violators and the 1968 gun registration law for manufacturers and importers, allowing two Californians to be prosecuted for unregistered grenades. It rejected a San Francisco parents appeal against involuntary school busing and ruled banks cannot enter mutual funds. It held that some naturalized citizens living abroad can lose their citizenship.
