Fate Smiled On Trip In Blast Chief Says
Fire Chief William Fishbaugh told the Middletown Co-Operative Club that three people narrowly escaped death in the March 24 explosion at 1359 Central Ave. He cited the Nickell family and Mrs Leonaitman of Maud Muller Candy Shop as saved by timing and location. An eight to ten member team traced the cause to gas leaks in the candy shop basement, with the blast spreading from ignition in the shop. Twenty people were treated for smoke effects, and damage was estimated at about $75,000 to the candy shop, laundry, parlor, and two adjoining apartments. Chief Fishbaugh noted hospital fires as part of broader U S fire-loss risks.

Middletown Official Blasts State Aid to Cities Budget Push
Middletown City Attorney Fred J. Schatzmann condemned Ohio state aid to local governments as an overreach of taxes. He argued funds designated as aid merely shift collection to state channels and leave subdivisions dependent while urging uniform tax policy without favoritism. Schatzmann noted Middletown had not yet received word on its share for 1949-1950 but expected action within two months.
