Veterans of Foreign Wars origins and early purpose
The Veterans of Foreign Wars began from Spanish-American War veterans uniting to aid comrades who faced hardship and unpreparedness in war. They formed in Denver in 1913 to speak as one force, earning respect as the Gold Chevron organization with over ten thousand Posts and seven thousand Ladies Auxiliaries, and maintaining a National Home at Eaton Rapids Michigan for widows and orphans.
