Old Believers in America after 1963 Tolstoy Grant
The Old Believers, split from the Orthodox Church in 18th century Russia, migrated to the United States in 1963 under Tolstoy Foundation sponsorship. About 225 people settled in two New Jersey communities and Tolstoy Farm, Nyack, N.Y., maintaining strict rules of no dancing, drinking, smoking, or television.
