Firemen Die as Wall Collapses in Bronx Factory Blaze

In New York a basement fire in a Bronx artificial flower plant triggered a five alarm blaze. Six firemen were crushed to death, 13 injured as a 25-foot-high wall collapsed, cutting power and lights. Fire Commissioner Cavanagh led the fatal response amid the debris.

Planes Sight Wreckage Of Missing C119

The U S Air Force reported wreckage of a missing C119 Flying Boxcar with five Americans aboard found on a peak on Shikoku Island 20 miles south of Saijo. No survivors confirmed. Rescue team to drop Friday to access the 6100 foot summit after the plane disappeared Tuesday on a cargo flight from Tachikawa to Ashiya near Kyushu. Names of the missing men not released.

Cleanup Begun In 13 States After Devastating Storms

In a mid continent spread, 13 states faced tornadoes and destructive winds killing 45 people and injuring about 400. Red Cross and civil defense crews, along with National Guardsmen, aided in the massive cleanup as 320 homes were destroyed and 969 damaged, with 1,496 families affected.

Wisconsin farmer held after threatening letter to Eisenhower

John Marek a 39 year old Wisconsin farmer was arrested by Secret Service on a charge of sending a threatening letter to President Eisenhower. Marek said he was distraught and did not intend to harm the President. He was held on a 500 dollar bond for federal grand jury investigation.

Bombs Dropped by Air Force Plane Rock Florida Coast

A mysterious explosion over the Gulf of Mexico rattled buildings along about 70 miles of the Florida west coast on a Wednesday night. The St. Petersburg Times cited a military spokesman saying an Air Force plane dropped 10 bombs during a practice mission, two exploding, as residents reported bright flashes around 9 p.m. The pilot misjudged distance, the spokesman added, and authorities did not name him.

Armed Pair Robs Union of $50,000 in Toledo

Two masked men robbed Willys Federal Credit Union on a Toledo auto plant lot, forcing treasurer Andrew Jones into a ravine and escaping with about $50,000. Police circulated a description of one suspect, 25 to 30, 5 feet 9 inches, 170 pounds, plaid jacket and gray trousers, with funds insured.

Twin Guilty Of Murder In Powell Slaying
