The Saturn 5 rocket lifted off on schedule but two of the second stage engines cut off early forcing the third stage to burn longer. Had astronauts been aboard they would have reached earth orbit but a wrong one, with fuel concerns and no immediate plan announced.
Allied spearhead forces press toward Khe Sanh as 20 000 troops and Marine units converge on the besieged base. The operation Pegasus, under Lt. Col. Victor A. Terry, began from Ca Lu with about 8 000 troops and by today more than doubled, facing sporadic artillery and hard terrain but reporting light casualties.
President Johnson will fly to Hawaii for high level talks with U.S. officials on peace prospects with North Vietnam. Washington has signaled readiness for initial contacts in Moscow or another capital, aiming to set a time and place for talks to scale down the war and seek a settlement. Officials warn of possible U.S.–South Vietnam rift over pace and scope of negotiations.
