More Money Needed For Schools Parley Shows Bond Issue
A special school board meeting forecast a 2 to 2.5 million dollar bond issue this fall to cover three years of student increases. Superintendent J D Blackford warned that even with new buildings funded, enrollment growth would restore crowded conditions. The board tied salary increases to bond decisions, noting teachers’ pay trails similar districts. A 11.5 mill levy may be needed in 1957 for operating costs, with housing projects worsening finances. Teachers pressed for raises. board sought more bond clarity before acting. The citizen committee to study building needs was formed after caucus. Clyde Yocum urged a $400 per teacher raise to align with peers. The teachers’ association listed A E Minnich as chair and members including Charles Ewart and Mrs Dorothy Stitt.
