Cold Front to Stay with Cold Weather Here

A cold front descended on Middletown and the Miami Valley Sunday and is expected to linger for a couple of days. The forecast calls for cloudy and cool conditions with a high near 43 today and possibly two to three degrees higher Tuesday. Sunday's low fell to 37 after a 52 high early, with strong winds making it feel colder. Some residents blamed the chill on visiting Hamilton basketball fans, though the weatherman gave no comment. Food Costs Fall Short Of Great Depression Days

The Agriculture Department says despite higher prices, average consumers spent a smaller share of income on food last year than in 1935–39. A diet costing 118.60 in the prewar era would cost 245 now, still representing 18 percent of income. Meat consumption rose from 126 to about 145 pounds per person yearly, reflecting improved diets and income gains. Farmers’ share of food dollars stands at about 51 cents today, down from wartime highs and earlier decades.
