Old Man Crushed by Erie Freight Train at Crossings
Eleazer Taylor, 72, of South Street, was struck crossing the North Street crossing by a freight train backing into a switch. Doctors amputated his legs, but he remained in a stupor and is not expected to survive. The incident faults the Erie Railway for lacking flagmen at crossings and urges trustees to enforce crossing safety.

Deerpark Board Forms Health Board Over Small Pox
The Deerpark town board and justices Dutcher Holbrook and Van Etten create a board of health with Dr Sol Van Etten as health officer and John H Durland of Huguenot as quarantine overseer. Quarantine tightens in Huguenot with several houses restricted and Delaware and Hudson boats stopped at Eddyville for inspection. Penalties for violating quarantine range up to 10 dollars in fines and up to two years imprisonment or both.

Milk train/news travel on New Jersey Midland opens
The milk train on the Midland begins running today over the New Jersey section to New Durham with plans to also carry butter and meat at reduced rates starting Monday May 6. Passenger service resumes from Hawthorne to Franklin with an excursion leaving Hawthorne this P M and arriving at Franklin at 3 o clock. Judge Low will join the party.

Route 1449 from Middletown to Searsville is extended to Pine Bush and six weekly trips are planned. Fire destroys multiple buildings in Canterbury village
Yesterday forenoon a severe blaze consumed Thos Foley's paint shop and a large combined store post office building. Charles Edwards and Mrs McQuaid residences burned, Hazen's drug store and Edward's livery stable badly damaged. Firefighters from Canterbury and Cornwall Landing contained the spread.
