James Elston’s Greenville hotel sale to James Sears under false pretences is exposed. Sears and Lea, a patent-right dealer, allegedly conspired to drain the hotel’s assets, buying on credit liquor and cigars in Port Jervis before fleeing. The Orange District Grand Committee of Odd Fellows met March 20 at Ustayantha Lodge Port Jervis presided by John W. Cory Dist. Dep. New members were admitted and past degrees conferred. Mount Olive Encampment No. 65 Newburgh was instituted and by law reports noted 300 copies printed at $20. Nominations for State Grand Officers included John M. Van Nort and Jas. Van Delfsen both of Newburgh with Dr S T Barrett elected Secretary. Next year’s meeting will be in Newburgh.

Mrs Townsend Fractures Leg En Route to Monroe Depot
Mrs Sylvanus Townsend of New York City fell while going to the Monroe depot to take the Orange County Express and broke her leg. She had brought to Monroe the previous day the body of her mother Mrs Strong, who died after a similar fall.

Aged Citizens Noted in Blooming Grove Area
The Independent Republican notes centenarians and near centenarians in the Blooming Grove area. Nancy Breed died at Washingtonville on March 4 at age 91 after living in the same house since March 12. Mary Kienan died in Salisbury Mills at age 95. A Salisbury Mills resident, 97, voted in the last town meeting. The region has many residents over eighty and about fifteen or twenty over seventy. A 106 year old Irish man died in Oxford last year.
