The Middletown Evening Press issues three times weekly in 1872 with carriage delivery ten cents weekly and four cents for single copies. Mail subscriptions: four dollars yearly, two dollars for six months, one dollar for three months. Office in Gothic Hall with postal rates fifteen cents per quarter.
Mr. A B Deming Newsdealer Bookseller and general agent for the Middletown Evening Press will oversee village delivery and collections biweekly. Single copies may be bought at Deming Morgan and Sloat Vail’s Bookstore for four cents.
The state held its annual election for Governor, Railroad Commissioner, Councilors, and State Representatives. Republicans claim a redeemed state with a strong turnout, noting prior fraud concerns and a legislature backed by Democrats and Labor Reformers. In 1868 Weston carried the governorship via joint ballot amid a three-party slate.
The investigation report on Senator Wood details loans from Jay Gould of ten thousand dollars and Boss Tweed of fifteen thousand dollars, with Bradner receiving five thousand. G W Cook swapped a Slate Hill farm for a house and lot in the village with Daniel Canfield. Jonathan Myers sold his Greenville area farm east of the village to Peter Detch for 6500 dollars. A T Baird purchased Mulford farm in Centre ville from Peter Holbert for 5800 dollars.
The Col lector of Olive, Ulster Co, led a police posse attempting to stop a train at Kokan on Saturday. A chain stretched from the rear car, but before a secure connection could be made the engineer started the locomotive. The posse then performed extraordinary feats of ground and body, with some members turning somersaults.
A 14 year old named John Langly, son of Charles Langly, was found dead in a barn at Crawford Junction near Middletown. The rope setup suggests strangulation with noose style, and the inquest jury returned death by strangulation, unable to confirm whether accidental or intentional. No motive could be determined and the event was described as bizarre and sad.

Goshen residents learned of a $600 village debt with $500 of bills from the old Board of Trustees and $100 more from last year. The new Board refuses to pay from current year funds without taxpayers authority and will call a special meeting for instructions. Old Trustees named are Ed Dikeman, R. C. Coleman, Jesse B. Mapes, C. G. Elliott, Chauncey Hulse. New Trustees include G. W. Millspaugh, H. A. Horton, J. W. Corwin, John A. Smith, R. A. Kipp.
At Greenville a twelve year old boy injured at school in September suffered a bone disease from a fungus growth. Despite five months of treatment, doctors Van Etten Wickham and Cole amputated the leg on the 4th to save the child’s life.
James Alward ends a year of leadership at Greenville public school. He earned praise from pupils and patrons for unyielding efforts and a successful debate program that expanded from private to public. The series sparked strong interest and enthusiasm among participants.
The Albany Assembly Printing Investigating Committee hears Hon. Isaac V. Montayne disclose gifts from Weed Parsons Co and The Argus Co. He admits a $500 present after a session and describesBooks and favors. another witness alleges a $5,000 gift. He explains the payments as after hours extra labor.
The Tribune reports on Mr. Montange’s testimony in the Assembly inquiry into printing abuses. Montange, former chairman of the Assembly Committee on Printing, confessed to taking $500 from Weed, Parsons & Co. and a similar sum from The Argus printing house. Miss Anna Conkling, Miss Phoebe Purdy, and Miss Eliza Purdy from the Marlborough tragedy are recovering from injuries.
A stock company formed at Newton New Jersey has chosen a park site to raise skunks for fur. The venture aims to breed, rear, and market the fur animals within the new facility. Authorities confirmed the plan is proceeding with local approvals and construction timelines.
Generals Dix Sickles and Barlow held the Erie palace while Jay Gould and a small retinue faced a strong police guard. The board of directors accepted Goulds resignation Tuesday and elected Gen Dix to replace him. Gould turned over the property as roughs were sent away and police moved to station houses. Albany March 13 The Erie Classification Act dominates the session as Senator Madden Leads a heated attack calling the act unjust and urging repeal while Robertson seeks to narrow the bill to apply only to the Erie Railroad Company. The Senate orders the measure to a third reading at 3 PM.
In Greenbush near Albany a man Samuel Fargue shot his wife, fired at his eighteen year old daughter, then killed himself with a jagged knife after a struggle in a wood-shed. Neighbors heard the shots and discovered the grisly scene in the home and shed. Fargue had been out of work and was described as a chistless character.
Capt. Elisha Freeman was granted a divorce from Charlotte A. Freeman in San Francisco on grounds of fraud in procuring the marriage. He claimed insanity about spiritualism and that a clairvoyant wife led him to wed under spirit guidance, with the supposed apparition appearing as foretold. Freeman, described as wealthy, sought relief from the arrangement.
