Mr A B Deming of Middletown Newsdealer and bookseller is named general agent for the Middletown Evening Press. He will oversee village delivery and collections every two weeks. Single copies cost four cents at Deming's and Vail's Bookstore.
An April earthquake leveled Bathang in Sachuen Province China destroying houses temples fortifications. About 2,298 people including soldiers priests and officials died in collapsing structures as fires raged for five days and the region endured ten days of distress before relief efforts reached survivors.
Western New Orleans between the old and new canals is inundated after heavy rains and levee crevasses. Additional crevasses threaten further property damage as water covers the streets and threatens nearby districts.

A May highway robbery claim near St Pauls Church led to relief for Mr Charles Kelly after a village investigation by Moses Van Keuren showed the attack and $400 loss were fraudulent. Kelly's sister in Iowa denies sending funds and the imposture ends with his departure from the community.
Vice-President Colfax arrived safely at his South Bend home on Saturday morning. Senator Fenton fell ill Friday in Jamestown and remains bedridden but is recovering. The president’s eldest daughter sails for Europe with friends. The President plans to spend next week at West Point then return for his son’s July 7 graduation. Clerk Frank Carmichael returns to duty after illness. E Smith Webb departs for Montgomery County where he will wed Miss Young tomorrow.
Rev. Mr. Harvey delivered the last sermon Sunday evening in the Main Street building that has long served as a house of worship. The church is moving on from the structure as it no longer meets the growing needs of the congregation. Harvey will be away only a few months, and friends were moved, showing their attachment amid uncertain tomorrows and seas of change.
The Congregational and First Presbyterian churches schedule fund-raising festivals at Empire Hall this week. The Grand Army of the Republic also promises a festival on Independence Day. St Pauls Sabbath School officers discuss a picnic plan.

Edmond Hammond was killed instantly by a lightning strike while logging near Centreville Sullivan County during a thunder shower. Losses total about 83000 with 42550 insured. Shipman had reported Erie brake workers plans and a retaliation theory is suspected.
The Sullivan County Republican honors Mrs. Sarah A. Sweet wife of Halstead Sweet died at the Old Stage House Middletown on the 22d. She led the hotel domestic department for 39 years across Burlingham Bloomingburgh and the Mohawk house, praised for steady care and cheer. The paper extends sympathy to Sweet in his years of decline.
Erie Railway brakemen in the Western Divisions strike after wages were cut from two dollars to 1.88. A freight out of Hornellsville derailed cars and molasses wreckage followed. New York men in the crowd raided saloons at Turner's Turn Middletown and other stations, prompting closures along the line as the strike expanded.
